Student

Your rights, first.

This page explains the setup. But first, know this: your face data never leaves your phone, your location is never read, and for every attendance you keep a piece of evidence. Which method counts is decided by the teacher of the course.

Completely free for students. You pay nothing for the app.

Five things

What you should know before setting up

The teacher chooses the method

For each class, the teacher decides which routes count as valid. In the app you see which methods you can use in that class before attendance begins.

If proximity verification or the QR code is enabled and you do not want to use face verification, you check in with those at the same speed and with no extra step. Only in a class where face verification alone is enabled will your teacher mark you by hand.

You can turn face verification off at any time: a single tap deletes your template from your phone. Your attendance status, your grade and your rights as a student are not affected.

Your face template never leaves the phone

Your template is created in your phone's secure hardware zone and stays there. It is never transferred to our servers, your school or a third party. There is no central face database.

The image from the camera is never saved: it is erased from memory the moment verification ends.

Your location is never read

The app does not ask for location permission and collects no GPS data.

The system may notice an inconsistency such as “two classrooms covered in an impossible amount of time” — but it derives that not from your phone's location but from two attendance records contradicting each other.

The receipt is evidence in your favour

For every successful check-in a signed receipt is created on your phone. That receipt lets you prove that your record was accepted by the system without having to trust the server.

If the system loses or deletes a record, the receipt in your hand shows it. You can export the receipt and attach it to your appeal.

You can appeal every outcome

Your attendance result appears on your phone immediately. If you think it is wrong you can appeal — during the class or afterwards.

You can request every security flag held about you, with its date and reason, and appeal each one separately.

No automated decision is made about you

Outcomes such as failing a course on absence are never produced automatically by the system. The strongest thing the system can do is ask your teacher to verify you face to face in that class.

The outcome is always determined by the teacher. This is also guaranteed technically: the software component that writes the attendance result has no access to the risk records.

Setup

Three steps

  1. Open the invitation link

Because you are enrolled in the course, your teacher or your school sends you an invitation link. You do not have to register yourself — you are already on the roster.

Open the link and set a password of at least 8 characters. Your account is created at that moment. The invitation is single-use and valid for 14 days.

  2. Download the app and sign in

Download the student app and sign in with your institutional email address and the password you set. The courses you are taking appear in the My courses tab.

  3. Enrol your face, if you want to

If you want to use face verification, you enrol either in front of your teacher or on your own, depending on your institution's policy. You see a separate consent screen before enrolment.

You can skip this step. If you do, you check in using proximity verification.

During class

How attendance is taken

  1. A notification arrives

When your teacher starts attendance, your phone detects it and asks for verification. If Bluetooth is off, you scan the QR code on the teacher's screen.

  2. You verify

If you use face verification, the front camera opens; it takes a few seconds and the image is deleted immediately. If you do not, proximity verification completes silently.

  3. Your receipt is created

Your phone shows “Your attendance has been recorded” and your receipt number:

MAK-2026-0314-A7F3 Course : BIL301 Data Structures Round : 1/3 Method : face verification Channels: Bluetooth, QR code Signature: ✓ valid

The receipt stays on your phone. You can see and export it from the My receipts tab.

  4. You may be asked again during class

Attendance is not tied to a single moment; there may be a second and a third round at times nobody knows in advance. If you leave class early you cannot be verified in those rounds.

  5. The teacher may confirm you visually

In every round the system picks a few students and asks the teacher. This is not an accusation — some of those selected are picked entirely at random, and being selected says nothing about you.

If something goes wrong

“I checked in but it is not in the system”

Normally this claim is one person's word against another's. The receipt turns it into something that can be resolved mechanically.

  1. You see the discrepancy in the app

The “Compare with server record” button in the My receipts tab compares the receipts on your phone with the server record. If a discrepancy is found, you see it before you file an appeal. You start the comparison yourself; it does not run by itself in the background.

  2. File an appeal

You file an appeal from the app with a single tap; your receipt is attached to it automatically.

  3. The receipt is reviewed as evidence

Your receipt goes through three separate checks: is the signature valid, has the content been unchanged, and is it inside the signed record of the class. If all three pass, it is proven that your record was accepted — the loss is on the system's side.

A receipt deleted silently is also detected. Receipts are chained to one another; if one is removed from the middle, the chain breaks and that is visible.

You do not have to ask us to have your receipt verified. New receipts are signed with a public-key signature and the public keys needed for verification are published at a public address — an address that asks for no identity.

This detail matters: if you had to prove your identity to us before obtaining the key, your verification would depend on our permission. For a receipt to be evidence against us, it has to be verifiable independently of us. Old receipts that were not signed this way say so on their face.

The app also performs this verification on your behalf. It fetches the public keys once, stores them on the phone and checks every receipt's signature on your device — afterwards even while offline. The result appears in the receipt list as one of three distinct states: “Signature verified”, “Signature invalid” (the content has been tampered with) and “Could not be verified” (the key could not be fetched, or the receipt is signed the old way). The last state is not an accusation, and the app never presents it as fraud; putting the two in the same box would be charging you with an offence that did not happen.

In the app

What else is there

Class reminders

You can get reminders for your upcoming classes. Your phone schedules the reminder itself, and in addition, when a class is moved, cancelled or a make-up class is added, the server sends you a notification — even while the app is closed.

We write down the cost: to be able to send you a notification, the server now stores a device token for your phone. We did not store one before, and we described that as a privacy feature; that is no longer true.

A notification never mentions your attendance result, your appeal, a flag about you, or your name — only information about the class. The reason: a notification shows on the lock screen, and anyone holding your phone reads it.

If you use an iPhone, these notifications will not reach you. There is no iOS build of the app. We are telling you because if we did not, you might trust the notification and miss a class.

App lock optional

If you want, you lock the app with your own face — not with your phone's own lock but with the app's own engine and the same template. The template still never leaves the phone.

It is entirely optional. Not turning it on, or turning it off later, does not affect your attendance, your attendance status or what your teacher sees; signing in with a password always remains available.

Device eligibility test

At setup, whether your phone provides the required hardware guarantees is tested. If it does not, you are told up front and routed to the teacher-approved path — you are not left alone with a verification that fails silently at check-in time.

Your attendance status

The answer to “how many absences do I have left?” is now in the app: in the My attendance tab you see in how many of the closed sessions you were recorded PRESENT, PARTIAL or ABSENT, your absence ratio, the per-term limit and your remaining allowance. You can tap a course to see a session-by-session breakdown and file an appeal from there for a session you think is missing.

You also see the outcome of your appeal in the same place: its state and the reason the teacher wrote. An accepted appeal really does correct your attendance record.

The system's known limits

We are not keeping these from you.

  • Face verification is not 100% accurate. The system may fail to recognise you or, very rarely, confuse you with someone else. That is why you can appeal every outcome and why teacher approval is always in the loop.
  • Identical twins cannot be told apart. This is a known limit of all face recognition technology. If you have a twin or a very similar-looking sibling, tell your institution.
  • Risk flags can be wrong. If your timetable has changed or a classroom assignment is incorrect, an unfair flag can arise. That is why no flag on its own produces an outcome.
  • Being asked for extra verification is not an accusation. In every class the system picks students at random independently of any risk state; you may have been picked.
  • A compatible phone is required. If your phone is not suitable, you take part through the teacher-approved manual route. No student is excluded.
  • The app runs on Android. There is no iPhone version. If you use an iPhone, your attendance is taken through the teacher-approved route — and that is a fully valid attendance record.
